Wrong Size
While most people are mindful of the space they need when sleeping, it can still be an easy mistake when shopping in-store or online. Do you need to size up a bed for your growing teenager? Are you unable to sleep due to your spouse’s movement while they sleep? This is always important to keep in mind when choosing a size. Here is a general size chart for standard mattress sizes
- Twin = 38″ x 75″
- Full = 54″ x 75″
- Queen = 60″ x 80″
- King = 76″ x 80″
Wrong Firmness
If you’ve had a lot of back pain when trying to fall asleep or when you wake up, it could be caused by your sleeping position and the firmness of your mattress. Each of us is a different weight and height and that affects how we lay on our mattresses as well. As a general rule of thumb, if you weigh less than 150 lbs you may want to look into the softer side of your ideal firmness. If you weigh over 230 lbs you’ll likely want to stick to the firmer side of the spectrum.
Let’s take a look at what mattresses fit your sleep position:
- Back Sleeper – Medium Firmness. This kind of mattress will give you the proper support for your lower back. Be careful not to get something too stiff for your weight, though.
- Side Sleeper – Medium to Soft Firmness. When you sleep on your side, it’s important to have a mattress that is soft enough to give sink room for your shoulders and hips. When you have the right firmness, it keeps your spine aligned as well.
- Stomach Sleeper – Firm. This sleep position is not recommended, for your spine and health. However, we understand that training your body to sleep in a different position takes time. Our recommendation is to purchase a double-sided mattress, and start on the firm side, and when your back begins to become more comfortable that you can sleep on your back or side, switch to the softer side of the mattress.
- Combination Sleeper – Medium Firmness. If you move a lot in your sleep, you’ll want to look into getting one that is not firm and with a gel foam to help create absorptions for your body.
Wrong Material
Do you get too warm when sleeping on your current mattress? You might want to consider switching to gel foam. Accompany your new mattress with moisture-wicking sheets and covers as well. It’s also good to consider a soft, quilted top and a mattress with anti-microbial properties in it.
Buying something too cheap or expensive
One perk to being able to buy a mattress online is the prices tend to be lower than in-store. This tends to mean you have an available budget for a higher-quality mattress. Does this mean you need to buy the most expensive option? No. However, you should be serious when considering an upgrade. You’ll want something that can last you for at least 8 years in your home. How you sleep does have an overall effect on your entire body. Mattresses should never be labeled as “one size fits all.” Everyone has different needs and yours should be met.
